Who will win FMU top Job?

The battleground for the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda-FMU  elections has been set  and the month for elections is May,but the actual date is yet to be announced.

However, what is known is that three candidates, rally driver  John Burrows Lumu, former rally driver Uncle George Kagimu and motocross  rider  Jimmy Akena will face off for the top job of president of FMU.

To the motorsport fraternity, the race is between  Kagimu and Akena, but Burrows as a challenger is just testing his strength for the future.

Kagimu is a former mayor of  Mukono Municipality and a former president of FMU who achieved alot for the federation between 2009-2013 after replacing David Bitalo who was also a member of United Motorsport Club.

The Festino Motorsport Circuit proprietor is an addent lover of motorsport and even after his exit from the chair of the federation, Kagimu has always supported motorsport in the different capacities.

His passion falls much in rallying and Go-karting the disciplines he supported and feels that there are great opportunities to explore that have not tapped.

Currently a board member of the Uganda Registration Service Bureau,Kagimu is one that has kept his relationship with the corporate brands that are much needed for the growth of the sport.

On the other hand, Akena, a Uganda Motocross Club chief and a Member of the Uganda Parliament  for Lira Municipality is a motocross rider and also an addict of motorsport.

Akena roots for the welfare of athletes and the expansion of the sport countrywide which falls in line with the UMOSPOC strategic plan of growing the different motorsport disciplines in the entire country.

His political position as a member of parliament and a party leader puts him in a good negotiating position for the increase of the motorsport budget.

John Burrows Lumu, a rally driver and a parent rider boost of a big relationship with the competitors which guarantees him a peace and unity back in the sport.

Lumu, a businessman, aims to strategically position the federation to the corporate world.

Whoever wins the elections his strong focus should be on returning sanity and unity in the sport. Today the division and enmity in motorsport worries a lot.

This follows a court battle after former rally driver Geofrey Nsamba sued the federation pleading court to stop the Extra-ordinary assembly called and order the management to hold elections in the current constitution.

The court is set to pronounce its decision on April19.

“I think we need to bring back peace and unity in the sport, Good Governance but most important is also to look at the future of motorsport and tap into the undiscovered opportunities like Go-kart,” Kagimu noted Kagimu.

Equally so is Akena, a motocross rider and UPC party president in the political circles who is also for peace and stability in the sport.

Burrows cited the dwindling sponsorship, welfare of the competitors and building a corporate brand for the federation as key areas he intends to address.
